John Stossel on CSPAN
I saw John Stossel speaking about his new book, Give Me a Break, on CSPAN. After what turned out to be a very interesting lecture, the college students asked questions - a few of which were about his stance on the issue of abortion. He said he believes life begins at conception, and is personally opposed to abortion (isn’t everyone?), but his feeling was that the child is inside a woman’s body, therefore at her mercy. He said he thinks it comes down to self-defense. I was surprised to hear him use that line of reasoning. Self-defense? If I kill someone because they are inconvenient to me, that is murder, not self-defense. I could see the reasoning of self-defense in the awful case of an ectopic pregnancy – then that would make sense. He did say that he thinks there ought to be a cutoff at about 5 months. It seemed like the students wanted to argue with him a little, but after getting his opinion, they refrained. Good stuff, that CSPAN.

The book itself is a bit of an eye opener if you’re interested in the mechanics and rationalization behind big government and overregulation.
I wish I could say I were surprised by Stossel (or anybody else) being so wishy washy on following through with firm convictions, but for some reason this kind of nonsequitor doubletalk seems the norm for the day. Dealing with public figures is increasingly like speaking with a PR department instead of a human.
